Withdrawal from Iraq shouldn’t equal abandonment

The last contingent of U.S. forces left Iraq in December, ending almost a decade of costly, controversial warfare. The fledgling Iraqi democracy is now taking its first steps as a sovereign state. Unfortunately, even as increased tension looms there, U.S. political leadership is focused on our domestic elections, ready to let Iraq’s fate slide out of sight and out of mind. This should not be allowed to happen.
